WHAT NOW? Wednesdays – When Pride Gets in the Way of a Career

If you’ve read my previous blogs, you might recall that I’m a long-time Denver Broncos fan and have been on the fence over whether or not to switch teams after 20+ years. This hit home last night when I considered wearing my Broncos jersey to my son’s baseball game (his new team name is the Broncos with the identical mascot). I regret to admit I decided not to wear it in case we ended up at a sports bar for dinner after the game. With the childish drama currently being played out between the new coach and quarterback, I’m honestly a little embarrassed to be a Broncos fan right now.

In case you haven’t heard the story, here’s the bottom line as I see it. Denver’s new inexperienced head coach (McDaniels) unsuccessfully tried to trade the young franchise quarterback. Already disappointed with coaching changes, the presumed franchise quarterback (Cutler) got his feelings hurt. He skipped the team’s first meeting last week, will not take part in the voluntary offseason program (forfeiting a $100K workout bonus) and has asked to be traded. I understand he lost trust in his new coach and got his feelings hurt, but he is still a Bronco and is letting down his team and himself over PRIDE. There’s no question McDaniels made some serious mistakes and will probably make more. The bigger problem I see is that Cutler needs to be a leader on his team as long as he is there and his team needs him.

So what happens when you’re a top performer and a new boss comes in who doesn’t appreciate your talent? And what if word gets out your boss is shopping around for new talent and you feel seriously undervalued and insecure in your position. What now?

My advice is DON’T LET PRIDE GET IN YOUR WAY. As a leader, take the high road, set an example – DON’T SULK. No one says you have to stay forever, but if you give it a chance, you might prove yourself to the new boss and have incredible success with your new team. If you let pride get in the way, you may never know. I think the Broncos owner Pat Bowlen summed it up well when he said “If you are going to be an unhappy camper, there is no real reason to be here.”
