Social networking is new to me...as those of you who read my first blog know. (btw-thank you for the kind & welcoming comments :))
I am still learning my way around the various sites and slowly figuring out how they work & how I can use each to the best benefit.
One thing I did not expect was how they would help me in getting to know my co-workers better...which I guess I should have known, since they ARE social networking sites, but still it was an unxpected bonus for me.
I work in an environment where I talk to people on a daily basis that I have never met face to face. This can sometimes feel impersonal and make it difficult to form real connections. We are expected to rely on each other daily and to perform together as a team without knowing anything at all about the other person.
Through what I once would have considered a silly little survey, I have learned more about the people I work with than I have in months of working with them.
Things ranging from the random and trivial to the personal and meaningful sit one on top of the other in a list of "things about me" that was passed along from person to person...each taking the time to offer up a few nuggets about themselves.
Reading through these, I discovered personalities...keen senses of humor, clever wit, family factoids and common interests...all things that will help me relate better to my co-workers.
So what I thought was simply a business tool has turned into much more for me...let me know if you have shared similar experiences.
Hope you all have a fantastic week!
