WHAT NOW? Wednesdays – Back to Work in a Tight Market

In this tough economy and tight job market, I've seen an increasing number of friends and family forced to make changes in how they work and support their families. One example is a former Bank VP who has been a stay-at-home Mom for 16 years while her husband’s real estate brokerage flourished. After a few tough years in the real estate market, things are still not looking up and she needs to go back to work to pay the bills. Another is a Mom who was in Healthcare Recruiting 10 years ago but became a part-time real estate agent to have more flexibility. With no home sales in a year, she is looking at returning to Staffing only to find that new technology has dramatically changed the industry. Both have a lot to offer but they are not up to date on today’s workforce or Web 2.0 and other technologies. What now?

First of all, I suggest getting online and embracing new technology and social networking. If you need help, ask your kids or join some networks with subject matter experts who would love to help. An added side benefit is gaining a better understanding of what your kids are up to!

Second, remember what you have to offer from all your previous experiences and don’t be afraid to try something new. That Bachelors degree obtained 20 years ago may not help you as much in today's job market, but your alumni network could open some doors. There all kinds of websites and blogs out there with tips on changing careers and re-entering the workforce. Just Google what you’re looking for.

Short-term certificate programs can be another great way to jumpstart a new career. I read a great article on this in the Atlanta-Journal Constitution that gives example after example of success stories. As noted in the article, a certificate can be a way to test-drive a field to see if it’s right or a steppingstone to a higher degree or job of interest.
