Are you or a friend/family member struggling as a student to decide on what curriculum and career path to pursue? Are you concerned about what can be done now to help secure a good job upon graduation? If not, maybe you should be. So what now?
There are a number of ways to approach this topic, and I believe there are many avenues that lead to success. But today, I will narrow it down to a few things you might want to start thinking about if you haven’t already. I have seen the most success when students incorporate research, networking and experience into their plans.
1) Research – With the world wide web at your fingertips, there is no reason not investigate careers, salaries and job trends related to your interests. In addition to looking up employment statistics and trends, you might want to google subjects important to you such as “recession proof jobs” or workforce trends specific to a selected geography. There are also plenty of sites out there with advice and resources such as
www.collegerecruiter.com.
2) Networking – Take advantage of social networking sites to get advice and share experiences. College alumni and student groups are all over Facebook and other networks. Don’t be afraid to talk to your instructors and college advisors – they may be able to help you connect directly with alumni or professionals in your field of interest.
3) Experience – Internships, volunteer work and leadership positions in student groups and projects can make you more marketable upon graduation. Look for work and leadership opportunities that will develop your skills and demonstrate proven success to future employers.
And last but not least, don’t hesitate to ask questions and talk to professionals. If you know a student who is overwhelmed by information and struggling with direction, you can have them join this network and email me – I’d be glad to help. Understanding that our workforce is our future, I think you’ll find most professionals and educators are more than happy to assist however they can. Just remember to reach out to them. :)
